Focus is by rack and pinion. The thinner, upper support slides within the larger bottom support. The rack gears are machined into the upper shaft.

There is a window machined into the bottom support shaft through which you can view the moveable shaft (arrow). The friction spring that normally would press on the movable microscope support arm is missing from this instrument.
